Blepharitis & meibomian gland dysfunction is a troublesome but not sight threatening condition that can be difficult to effectively treat.
The eyelid margins are a difficult place to clean and often when you are performing lid scrubs, you are not cleaning as thoroughly as is needed.
This is where we can help. In the same way you may see the dentist to have your teeth cleaned, even though you brush your teeth twice a day. Your eyelids also have difficult to reach areas and the same applies to them. You can continue with your eyelid hygiene but every 6 month or 12 months we can give them a more thorough clean.
Our Optometrist is able to carry out this advanced service called micro blepharo-exfoliation of the eye lid margin under topical local anaesthetic. This is done using the BlephEx system and is effective for the treatment of blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction.

BlephEx® is a painless procedure performed by the Optometrist. A revolutionary new patented BlephEx® hand piece is used to very precisely and carefully, spin a medical grade micro-sponge along the edge of your eyelids and lashes. This procedure is effective at removing scurf and debris and exfoliating your eyelids.
The procedure lasts about 6 -8 minutes and is well tolerated. Most patients simply report a tickling sensation. A numbing drop is usually placed in each eye prior to treatment for increased comfort. The eyes are rinsed well afterwards.
After the procedure, the patient is instructed on how to maintain their clean eyelids with regular nightly lid hygiene. Home treatments are only semi-effective. The procedure is typically repeated at 6, 9 or 12 month intervals depending on the ability of the patient to maintain lid hygiene.
For meibomian gland dysfunction the micro blepharo-exfoliation help to remove bacteria from the surface of the eyelid margin. This bacteria is responsible for eyelids styes. It also clears the capped meibomian ducts, allowing the flow of the tears.
